85-Year-Old Edmonds Man Set to Hike 100 Miles to Honor Daughter's Memory

A retired Edmonds teacher will embark on a long backpacking trip this summer to honor his daughter and raise money to fight ovarian cancer.

Jack Kendrick, 85, tells The Herald he plans to hike at least 100 miles along the Pacific Crest Trail in central Washington starting next month. Along the way, he'll be collecting donations for the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Oregon & SW Washington.

Kendrick, who taught biology in Shoreline, lost his daughter, Michelle, to ovarian cancer in 2006. His mother died of the same disease in 1942.

His "Hiking for Michelle" campaign has already raised more than $4,000.
