Edmonds July Fourth Celebrations Canceled Over Coronavirus

"An Edmonds Kind of Fourth" is canceled for the first time since World War II, and the Edmonds Chamber is worried about its future.

EDMONDS, WA — The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce has canceled its annual Fourth of July celebrations, citing the state's ongoing coronavirus response and the timeline for Gov. Jay Inslee's phased reopening plan. According to the chamber, "An Edmonds Kind of Fourth" has not been canceled since World War II.

"This community celebration has been a signature event of the Edmonds Chamber since 1907," said Greg Urban, CEO of the Edmonds Chamber. "It has always served as a point in time where we all connect, come together and show pride in our city and nation."

Under Inslee's Safe Start order, public gatherings and events remain largely restricted until the fourth and final phase is enacted. Phase 2, which allows for gatherings of no more than five people, is tentatively expected to begin June 1.

Inslee said at least three weeks will separate each step, meaning the earliest timeline for the third phase, permitting gatherings up to 50 people, would be in late June. The last step, which lifts the cap on all gatherings and recreational activities, would not be possible until mid-July at the earliest.

The Edmonds Chamber said it now faces a significant threat to its operating budget, which is funded primarily through annual memberships and revenue generated from major events. With so many businesses closed, the chamber said many have not been able to afford their membership dues.

"With the cancellation of the 4th of July and potentially the Taste Edmonds in August, the non-profit will no longer have the necessary funds to maintain operations and keep the small staff of three going," the chamber wrote. "For the first time in the organization's 113 years, the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce is at risk of being no more."

How you can help

The chamber is reaching out to the public for support, in the form of individual memberships, to help keep the doors open.

The cost for a yearly membership is $125, which can be paid monthly, quarterly or annually. For those who wish to donate more, the chamber said you can register an additional membership in your pet's name. So far, two dogs are official members of the chamber. Residents can also send direct donations through the Edmonds Chamber website.
