Edmonds Schools Discusses Removing Police Officers From Campuses

A petition is calling for the removal of student resource officers from high school campuses, according to local news reports.

EDMONDS, WA — Some students and community members are calling on Edmonds School District to remove police officers from school campuses.

Edmonds Beacon reports the idea of removing student resource officers (SROs) from Edmonds high school campuses had more supporters than detractors in recent school district board discussions on June 9 and June 16.

Following the meetins, a petition calling for the removal of police officers gained more than 1,100 signatures and was sent to the district, the Beacon reported.

My Edmonds News reports the school board last week held a discussion allowing community members to share feedback on the issue.

Over 140 people registered to speak during the discussion, according to the report.

The school district's contract with Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace police departments is scheduled to expire at the end of the month.

The board is set to vote on the contracts in a June 23 meeting, according to My Edmonds News.
