Edmonds-Woodway Wrestling Sends Seven to State

The Warriors turned in a strong performance at the regional wrestling tournament.

The Edmonds-Woodway wrestling team finished fourth at Saturday’s region 1 4A Wrestling Championships and will send seven wrestlers to the Mat Classic State Championship meet this weekend at the Tacoma Dome.

The Warriors were led by Ryan DeWeese, who took first in the 130-pound weight division with an overtime win over Clint Powers of Skyview in a match-up of the second-and-third ranked wrestlers in the state at that weight class, according to washingtonwrestlingreport.com.

“Right now, he’s on a roll,” Dave Gilbertson of WWR said of DeWeese. “He went through a rough spell where I saw him take three or four losses, but he’s pinned everbody except for Powers and Powers is one of the state title favorites.”

No other Edmonds-Woodway wrestlers won their weight classes, but three took third place after suffering their only losses to the eventual weight-class champions. Andrew Vulliet (112 pounds) took third after losing 5-4 to eventual champion Matthew Nguyen in an earlier round.

“Vulliet’s going to have a real shot at placing top-six this year,” Gilbertson said.

Mac Hutchinson took second in the 140-pound division, suffering a defeat via pin at the hands of Steven Walkley, ranked number one in the weight class by WWR.

John Kim finished third in the 160-pound division, losing on points in the second round to the eventual champion and number-one ranked Alex Coffman.

Noah Cuzzetto qualified for the Mat Classic in his first regional. The freshman took fourth after recovering from an early injury defeat.

“Getting a freshman into state, especially when he’s not real big, that’s a pretty big deal for them,” Gilbertson said.

Matt Cuzzetto finished third in the 135-pound division and Zach Perez took third in the 171-pound division.

The Mat Classic begins on Feb 18 at the Tacoma Dome, with the championship round taking place on Feb 19. To see first-round pairings and brackets, click here.
