Mayor's Memorial Day Message

Edmonds Mayor Mike Cooper will be attending the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Edmonds Cemetery today. Below, he offers a few thoughts on what today represents:

The final weekend of May has different meanings around the community, such as: School’s almost out, summer is here and boating season is upon us, and of course, a three day weekend loaded with picnics and celebrations.

During this Memorial Day weekend of celebration, please take some time to stop and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice serving our country. 100 Edmonds area men and women have lost their lives fighting in wars to protect our freedom. 

I have two very important items in my office that are a constant reminder of that sacrifice.  The American flag in my conference room was a gift to the city in honor Army Sergeant Major Larry Strickland who gave his life in the attack on the Pentagon September 11, 2001.  The other is a photograph honoring the 343 firefighters who perished at the World Trade Center.

Monday, I will visit three locations in our city; first I will attend the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Edmonds Cemetery, then I will stop at the memorial in front of the museum and finally over to the fallen firefighter memorial at the fire station.

This weekend is a time to enjoy your family, but please remember those who have give their lives so that we can enjoy freedom.  Have a pleasant holiday and be safe.
