New Edmonds Mural Ushers in Change of Season

While the weather is starting to feel like summer’s winding down, are we really ready for snow?

Muralist Susan Babcock just finished , “Winter Walk,” on Fifth Avenue downtown, which features a scene with the white stuff.

"It is that distinction, the snowfall, that is earning Sue some pretty devout fans," said Jeff Stilwell, municipal liaison for the Edmonds Mural Society. The nonprofit organization organized the raising of the mural, the third of three murals this summer.

 "Sue's mural is a delightful addition to the community's growing collection of murals," Stilwell added. "There are historical, contemporary, realistic and abstracted murals. No two are alike.  There is something for everyone."

Babcock said that one of her favorite parts of the experience was meeting the people who watched her work on the piece, which is in the alley next to the Historical Museum. 

"From the mayor on down," she said, "to the kids from our sister city in Japan, it was wonderful getting all of their reactions."

Babcock had some help from Edmonds resident Sally Hyde, who volunteered several hours to paint. Although Hyde isn’t an artist, Babcock made it easier to help by drawing out blocks of the mural on the wall. "It was kind of like coloring a coloring book," Hyde said.
