Northern Lights Visible This Week Over Puget Sound

Clear skies and a solar storm will give Puget Sound residents the chance to see the aurora borealis this week.

EDMONDS, WA - Puget Sound residents will have another chance to view the Northern Lights, also called the aurora borealis, this week. Skies over Puget Sound will be mostly clear through Thursday and a solar storm will whip electrons across the upper atmosphere.

The Northern Lights are becoming almost a common sight over Puget Sound. A powerful solar storm in late September created a spectacular show. The lights were also visible in July.

The National Weather Service predicts that skies will be clear Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. However, clouds will roll in after late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

The Northern Lights are created as a result of collisions between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere and charged particles released by the sun, according to the Northern Lights Space and Science Centre in Canada.
