Why This White Washington State Man Wants Minority Certification

Ralph Taylor wants his business to be certified as minority-owned because a DNA test shows he is 10 percent non-white.

LYNNWOOD, WA -- A Washington state businessman is suing the government for refusing to identify him as a minority. The Seattle Times reported Ralph Taylor wants his business to be certified as minority-owned because a DNA test shows he is 10 percent non-white.

The story begins in 2010 when Taylor, who owns Orion Insurance Group in Lynnwood, used a DNA test to determine that he is "90 percent Caucasian, 6 percent indigenous American and 4 percent sub-Saharan African," the Seattle Times reported.

"Taylor is suing state and the federal government because he was denied a minority-business certification under a program created more than two decades ago to help level the playing field for minority business owners seeking contracts in the transportation industry," the newspaper reported.

To further prove that he is a minority, "Taylor stated he subscribed to Ebony magazine and was an NAACP member. He also provided his DNA results and the 1916 death certificate of a black woman, but officials couldn’t determine whether she was related to him," Seattle Times reported.

For Taylor, the rules aren't clear.
