Position Title: GIS/Survey Intern
Department: Public Works Engineering
FLSA Status: Non-Union, Exempt
Pay Grade: $18/HR
Nature of Work:
This is a temporary, non-benefited, full-time, Fair Labor Standards Act overtime non-exempt intern position, lasting no more than 90 days or 5 months depending on the appointment. The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, or as approved by the position supervisor.
Under limited supervision of the Public Works Director, City Stormwater Engineer, and GIS Coordinator the candidate will be responsible for collecting field data of stormwater infrastructure and updating ArcGIS drainage maps as part of ongoing MS4 mapping improvements. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to collecting data using ArcGIS Collector and GPS Trimble survey equipment, importing survey data and updating ArcGIS drainage maps, performing water quality sampling and laboratory testing, and executing other various ArcGIS office tasks as needed. This is a full time, seasonal-temporary position.
Examples of Work:
Using GPS Trimble survey equipment to collect rim elevation and location data on catch basins, manholes, and other stormwater infrastructure throughout the city.
Lifting catch basin and manhole lids to gather pipe invert, size, and material information and logging associated data into ArcGIS Collector.
Importing survey data into ArcGIS and updating city GIS drainage maps.
Collecting stormwater runoff samples and conducting bacterial water quality testing at the City’s wastewater laboratory.
Performing various tasks in ArcGIS as needed.
Working outdoors for long periods of time (occasionally during inclement weather).
Working in vegetated areas (occasionally heavily vegetated) to gather required survey data and water quality samples.
Other tasks as assigned.
Reporting Relationships:
Reports to Public Works Director or his designee(s) depending on support tasks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
GPS and mobile technology hardware, software, and best practices for field data collection (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcGIS Pro, Collector for ArcGIS).
Geographic Information System (GIS) drafting theory, practices, hardware, and software.
Proper water quality sampling and testing techniques to ensure accurate data.
Microsoft office software: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access.
Principles, practices, terminology, methods, and techniques of civil and mechanical engineering, planning, design analysis, construction, and management of utility, transportation, and other public works projects.
Applicable city, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, specifications, standards, policies and procedures, including health and safety standards.
Mathematical concepts, including geometry, probability, statistics, and algebra.
Correct English usage, grammar, and vocabulary.
Ability To:
Work as a team as well as individually to collect precise and accurate measurements/data at each location.
Follow health and safety best practices for off-premise field work.
Repetitively lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Learn and utilize applicable technology and tools as assigned to complete assigned tasks for data collection.
Carry out best practices for water quality sampling and laboratory testing.
Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
Pay attention to detail and report consistent, efficient, and reliable measurements.
Education and Experience:
The ideal candidate will be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in an Engineering field with specific coursework relating to GIS and GPS data collection technology. Additionally, candidate must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher during the course of their education. Experience with survey technology, civil engineering, and water quality sampling/testing is preferred.
License/Certification:
Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
