Annual Tree-Lighting Ceremony Set For Dec. 1

Chosen from the grounds at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the city's tree will be at Skansie Park from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day.

GIG HARBOR, WA — With the Christmas tree planted and filled out at Skansie Park in Gig Harbor, all that's left are the lights.

Since 1999, the 201st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) has partnered with the city to provide a Gig Harbor Christmas tree at 3207 Harborview Dr. The tree will be on display from Thanksgiving through New Year's Day, with the special tree-lighting ceremony currently set for Dec. 1.

The event reportedly is a product of the Community Connector Program, which partners various city entities with JBLM divisions to "increase interaction between JBLM and local communities, enhance understanding of today's Army and JBLM, develop and maintain strong and positive community partnerships," according to CityOfGigHarbor.net.

In addition to the popular tree lighting, the event will include holiday music sang by the Spectrum Choral Academy’s Youth and Children’s Chorus, beginning at 5 p.m.; and the Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance will reportedly provide free hot chocolate, cider and cookies inside the Skansie Net Shed.

Santa Claus is expected to arrive around 5:30 p.m. to meet with children and families, and help Mayor Kit Kuhn light the tree. Afterward, Santa will be available to hear Christmas wishes.
