Gig Harbor Police Warn Of Scammers Posing As Officers

Police say they've recently had several reports of scammers calling and demanding back taxes over the phone.

GIG HARBOR, WA — Police in Gig Harbor say the area has been hit with a new wave of scam phone calls, and they're warning everyone to stay vigilant.

According to police, those scammers call residents, posing as part of the Gig Harbor Police Department. The calls may even appear that they are coming from their office.

Once connect with a potential victim, the scammers then demand that they pay back overdue taxes, threatening to arrest anyone who doesn't.

Police say, it's important to remember: that's not how this works.

Police officers will never call and demand money over the phone, neither will IRS agents. Another big tell: scammers often try to use shady payment methods to avoid having the money traced. If a caller asks for cash cards or for money to be wired with very specific instructions, that's possibly a scam.
