Important Safety Tips For Boating In Washington

Over the past month, the state has seen 25 boating accidents and five deaths. Now officials are offering some key tips to increase safety.

SEATTLE — Summer may be waning but it's no time to slack off: the Washington State Parks Boating Program is warning everyone to remember to stay safe if they're going to go out on the water.

Over the last 30 days, they say Washington has had 25 recreational boating accidents and five boating-related deaths— all critical reminders of the need for caution while in the open water.

“We are asking all boat and paddlecraft owners and operators to help reduce fatalities and injuries on the water,” said Rob Sendak. “Boaters need to take personal responsibility for their own safety as well as the safety of their passengers.”

  • Get educated. Know all navigational rules, emergency procedures and safety requirements.
  • Share a float plan. Tell family members or friends where you're going and when you expect to be back.
  • Always wear a life jacket. Jackets should be properly-fitted and Coast Guard-approved.
  • Have safety equipment on hand. That includes flares, navigation lights, a whistle or horn, and a first-aid kit.
  • Stay sober. Piloting a boat under the influence is dangerous and a crime.
  • Follow guidelines. Certain areas are off limit to boaters for a reason.
  • Be patient at boat launches. If one place is too packed, consider moving to another.
