GIG HARBOR, Wa. – The Greater Gig Harbor Foundation is holding a crockpot recipe contest to kick off its second annual #Community Harvest Project. The contest is open until July 15, and the recipes will help serve about 50 percent of the annual needs for both the Food Backpacks 4 Kids program and the Gig Harbor Basket Brigade.
“Successful partnerships are the key to making a positive impact in our community, and we’re proud to work with two great organizations that do so much for families across both our Key and Gig Harbor peninsula communities,” said Jud Morris, the chair of the Foundation’s Social Capital Core Area Board.
The goal is secure ingredients for more than 12,000 nutritious meals to feed 425 families every weekend for 29 weeks from the end of October through the end of the school year.

Each recipe will be judged by local volunteers based on nutrition, taste, visual and crowd appeal. Canned, boxed or dry ingredients will be predominantly featured. Some fresh ingredients will be acceptable. A grand prize will be awarded, and trophies will be presented to first-, second- and third-place winners. Entry forms can be found at www.gigharborfoundation.org/communityharvest/recipe-contest.
The project will be celebrated during Make a Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 28, when bags of food and ingredients will be accepted at the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation, 7191 Wagner Way, Suite 102.

The contest and nonprofit partnerships helps the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation reach as many people on both peninsulas as possible, Foundation CEO Julie Ann Gustanski said.
“This is similar to Northwest Harvest, but every donation for our #Community Harvest stays right here in Gig Harbor or the Key Peninsula,” she said. “This is a positive way to help neighbors you may not even know are struggling with hunger.”
The project also provides a portion of Thanksgiving Day meals through the Gig Harbor Basket Brigade.
Twenty-nine recipes will be selected – one for each week – and they will be compiled in a cookbook that will be available for $12 in October.
In addition to the contest, the #Community Harvest campaign will be looking for sponsors to provide either financial support or ingredients for selected recipes. For more information, visit www.gigharborfoundation.org/communityharvest or call 253-514-6338.
