Firefighters say only one unit burned, but nine others were so severely damaged by smoke and water that residents will need new homes.

LAKEWOOD, WA — The residents of ten apartments are without homes after a 2-alarm fire in a Lakewood apartment complex Tuesday.
According to West Pierce Fire & Rescue, shortly before 4:30 p.m. crews were called to an fire in the Four Fountains Apartments at 30 Thunderbird Parkway.
Shortly after arriving, firefighters upgraded the incident to a 2-alarm fire. The emergency response was big enough that it caused problems for commuters heading down nearby Steilacoom Boulevard. According to firefighters, the blaze originated in a unit on the complex's third floor. Their crews were able to keep the fire itself contained to that unit, but it was heavily burned. Nine other units were also left uninhabitable because of severe water and smoke damages.
One resident also had to be rescued from the building by firefighters, but was unharmed.
