2 Shot On I-5 In Lakewood, WSP Investigating

Troopers say they are investigating after two people were shot near Bridgeport Way. Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.

LAKEWOOD, WA — Washington State Patrol reports that two people have been injured and one man has been taken into custody after a shooting on I-5 in the Lakewood area.

According to WSP Trooper Ryan Burke, the shooting happened on the freeway near Bridgeport Way sometime before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

The victims, a man and a woman, each suffered a single gunshot wound. Both have been taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Investigators say they believe the shooting started inside a car as it drove down the freeway. One victim managed to get out and onto the side of the road, where she was helped by witnesses.

Shortly after that, WSP arrived at the scene, where they found the suspected shooter, who had also left their car, gun in hand. The suspect then reportedly pointed his gun at the sergeant and at himself, but the gun was jammed and the sergeant was able to grab it out of the suspect's hands and wrestle him to the ground. The suspect has since been taken into custody.

Troopers say its still unclear what sparked the shooting, and the case remains under investigation.

In the meantime, drivers have been advised to avoid the area.
