Bricks From Former Hudtloff Building On Sale; Proceeds Will Benefit Lakewood School Project

A former student of the Clover Park School, Barry Crust of University Place, is trying to raise money toward "something unique and artsy that depicts the history and heritage of Hudtloff between the years 1957-2012."

Earlier this year, we told you how a former student and retired teacher at Hudtloff Middle School, Barry Crust, was working the raise money by selling bricks from Lakewood school's former building.

The University Place man tells Patch that, yes, the bricks are officially for sale:

Just an update! I finally got my 500 bricks last week after a delay in the demolition of the old school. So I am beginning the sale of bricks on Tuesday. I am also circulating flyers to Lakewood businesses. I've gotten a big response from my Facebook page with the same title and anticipate good results. Thanks, Barry

Crust, 67, was a student at the Clover Park school, then later became a longtime PE teacher and sports coach. In fact, he was part of the inaugural class of students who went to Hudtloff when it first moved into its old building - back in 1957.

A few months ago when the district was preparing to tear the old building down, Crust got the idea to raise money by selling bricks from the former building. He is working to have each brick engraved with a commemorative plaque.

Profits from the bricks will pay for "something unique and artsy that depicts the history and heritage of Hudtloff between the years 1957-2012," he says.

Here are more details:

Cost is $20 per brick

Checks should be made to Hudtloff PTSA

Thos who purchase a brick can suggest what the actual project will be

According to the fundraiser's Facebook page, Crust presented the project to the Clover Park School Board this week and got a "thunderous applause."

He challenged former Hudtloff students who are business owners to match or beat the five bricks bought by Steve Kitchen, owner of the Lakewood Pub & Grill.

Good luck, Barry!
