City Manager: Lakewood To Partner With Pierce College Science Dome
Lakewood City Manager Heidi Wachter gives her weekly update to residents.

New Pierce College Science Dome and Health Center: Lakewood’s economic development team met with Pierce College President Denise Yochum to tour the campus and learn about new programs and opportunities. We’ll be partnering with Pierce College to highlight the new Science Dome and Health Center as a tourist destination, as well as following new pilot project educational courses, and their partnership with JBLM. They recently provided courses for 2,200 soldiers on base.

OSPI Statewide Youth Reengagement: This week a meeting of leaders in workforce, higher education, K-12, economic development and client service providers was convened by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). The purpose of the meeting was to look at models from other states that could solve the challenges for reaching students that are not finishing high school or going on to college. The ideas revolved around how to reach these populations, keep them engaged in learning, and to move them into training that will translate into a job and a future.
One of the models had a 64 percent success rate which seems very promising. The meeting was held at Highline College. City of Lakewood Economic Development Manager Ellie Chambers-Grady attended in her role on the Washington Economic Development Association Board.
