I-5 Semi Crash Spills Fuel On Road, Troopers Say Expect Delays

A fuel spill on the freeway is causing significant backups between Tacoma and Lakewood.

LAKEWOOD, WA — A semi crash on I-5 has troopers warning drivers to expect delays Friday.

1:50 p.m. update: the road has been fully reopened, though troopers say to expect lingering delays southbound through the early afternoon.

Just after noon, unsecured metal cargo fell from a vehicle heading southbound on I-5, crashing into a semi truck just north of the intersection with S 72nd Street.

No injuries have been reported. According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Robert Reyer, that debris punctured the semi's tank, spilling fuel onto the roadway. While the spill has been stopped, emergency responders had to close the rightmost lane of the freeway for cleanup.

The road has since been reopened, but troopers say to expect lingering backups through the early afternoon.
