TACOMA, WA —The Pierce County Council has issued a proclamation declaring July as Park and Recreation Month in the county, the council has announced in a press release.

For the month, the council has encouraged residents to "get out, explore and play at a park," and to share on social media their adventures at the county's diverse parks and recreation areas.

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has celebrated July as Park and Recreation Month since 1985, and has used the month to promote the importance of parks and recreation in health and wellness, conservation and social equity.

The theme of this year's NRPA celebration is "Our Park and Recreation Story." With that in mind, Pierce County is asking residents who have experienced meaningful "everyday adventures" in parks, on trails or at recreation programs to share their pictures or videos on Facebook and Instagram.

To join in, participants are asked to tag @PierceCountyParks and use the hashtags #OurParkandRecStory and #EverydayAdventures, so their post can be shared on the Pierce County social media accounts.
