This Weekend: Lakewood International Festival Honors South Korea

  • WHAT: Lakewood International Festival honoring South Korea
  • WHEN: 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday
  • WHERE: Pierce College, Fort Steilacoom, 9401 Farwest Drive SW

On Saturday, Lakewood will celebrate an Asian culture that is close to home.

This year's Lakewood International Festival honors South Korea, the place that many of the community's residents have roots.

As always, the family oriented event is free and will feature cultural entertainment, international cuisine and arts and crafts vendors.

This year's food fare hails from different parts of the globe: the Caribbean, Polynesia, Asia and the Americas.

“The Lakewood Sister Cities Association promotes international harmony just as the festival melds East and West and encourages cooperation between different cultures,” said Connie Coleman-Lacadie, LSCA president. “For example, the festival entertainment includes 10 culturally diverse performances.”

The headlining act is the Siheung Municipal Traditional Arts Troupe visiting from South Korea; the troupe will perform traditional Korean dances.

Other entertainment includes Japanese taiko drummers, an Indian dance group and other Russian, Filipino and Cambodian performers.

“As one of Washington state’s most diverse cities, we are delighted to support and celebrate the Lakewood International Festival,” noted Ellie Chambers-Grady, economic development manager for the City of Lakewood. “With enthralling costumes, cultural festivities and delicious goods, this is a great event for all-ages.”
