LAKEWOOD, WA — Pierce County is trying to boost the vaccination rate with a flashy incentive: a chance to win round trip tickets on an Alaska Airlines flight.

Over the next week and a half, the county is putting on a series of pop-up vaccination clinics at restaurants from Gig Harbor to Auburn to Lakewood and more. But not only will visitors have the opportunity to settle in for a nice meal after they get their shot— they'll also be entered to win a pair of round trip tickets to anywhere Alaska Airlines flies.

The county announced the promotion Tuesday with a clinic at the Black Bear Diner in Puyallup. The second clinic will be at Carrs Restaurant at 11006 Bridgeport Way SW in Lakewood from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

As Pierce County Council's Jani Hitchen explains, the county is hopeful the promotion might help convince residents who are on the fence about vaccination, which in turn will help hasten the end of the pandemic.

"We are all trying to figure out our new normal," writes Hitchen. "I am seeing signs of what that looks like because I am seeing people’s faces, seeing pictures of extended families and friends getting together after a long separation. Please remember that COVID-19 is still here. If not vaccinated, please consider doing so!"

Though Pierce County's vaccination rate lags behind many others, there have been recent signs of improvement. The latest data from the Tacoma - Pierce County Health Department shows that the number of average daily vaccinations in the county grew from under 4,000 in mid May to an average of 5,500 doses for the last week of the month.
