Evan Leonard of Artisan Electric, the city's solar array subcontractor, explains how the solar array will help power the Mercer Island Community Center during a July 23 ribbon cutting ceremony.
The 22-panel city-owned solar array, built by Marysville-based Silicon Energy, was funded through private donations and a grant from Puget Sound Energy. On rare occasions when the MICEC is closed and drawing negligible power from the power grid, the solar array could provide electricity to local homes, Leonard said.
Mayor Bruce Bassett, City Manager Rich Conrad, project manager Kirsten Stewart, council members Tana Senn and Mike Grady, and TIMI, IslandVision and PSE Energy representatives were among the dignitaries to attend the ribbon cutting event.
