Driver In Fatal Mercer Island Crash Going To Prison
Solomon Johnson died Sept. 1 after he was rear-ended by Brian M. Shields along West Mercer Way.

MERCER ISLAND, WA - A driver who killed a local man in a DUI crash in September has been sentenced to jail, according to Mercer Island police. On Sept. 1, Brian M. Shields rear-ended Solomon Johnson along West Mercer Way.
Shields, 20, of Issaquah, was drunk at the time of crash and on Nov. 30 pleaded guilty to a vehicular homicide charge. He was sentenced to 136 months in prison on Friday, according to court records. Police said that he hit Johnson's car traveling at a "high rate of speed." Shields and his passenger fled the scene of the crash, but were caught nearby by police.
The crash happened just before 7 a.m. on Sept. 1 at the intersection of West Mercer Way and Southeast 24th Street. Johnson, 21, left behind a wife, Candace, according to his family.
