Mercer Island Police to Take Back Unwanted Drugs Saturday

Do you need to dispose of expired and unused prescription and over-the-counter drugs? This Saturday, the Mercer Island Police Department can help you safely dispose of those unwanted drugs.

The Mercer Island Police Department will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) Drug Take Back program on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Mercer Island Police Department.

Residents may bring their unused, expired and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs to the police department during the event. There is no limit to the amount of drugs each resident can bring and there is no charge.

This is a great opportunity to clean out medicine cabinets and bathroom and kitchen drawers and cupboards, of unwanted, unused and expired drugs. The drugs are turned over to the DEA for proper disposal.

According to the DEA, which heads the national drug disposal program, unused or expired prescription medications can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse. The abuse of prescription drugs for non-medical purposes is the second-most common abuse of drugs in the United States, according to the DEA, and the proper disposal of drugs helps prevent abuse and protects the environment.
