Mercer Island Thrift Store Marks Best Sales Day Ever

The milestone happened on the shop's anniversary day sale in November.

MERCER ISLAND, WA - The city's thrift shop sold about $30,000 worth of goods during its November anniversary sale, an all-time sales record for the store.

How did they do it? By squirreling away choice items for the November sale.

Store employees stockpiled luxury goods, jewelry, and holiday decorations in preparation for the sale. Store employees and volunteers from the National Charities League of Mercer Island worked all day the day before the sale to transform the thrift shop into a "winter holiday wonderland," according to city officials.

The day of the sale, 603 customers bought over 3,500 items.

The thrift store generates revenue for the city's Youth and Family Services Department. Funds for the department are more important than ever. After the defeat of Proposition 1 in November, the city may cut MIYFS staff, including an administrative assistant, cutting a geriatric specialist down to part-time, and eliminating two of the four school-based mental health counselor positions.
