About 60 residents with Mercer Island's Emergency Volunteers received a thank-you dinner from the city on Wednesday at the Mercerwood Shore Club.
The Sept. 11 dinner featured music provided by a local Mercer Island Band, an Italian dinner, a door prize and Volunteer Awards.
The city's second CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Class series begins this Thursday Sept. 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Space in the classes are still available, which cover what to do when faced with a disaster.
Led by the city's Emergency Preparedness coordinator, MIPD Officer Jennifer Franklin, the volunteers in the past year have successfully established an emergency shelter on the South End of the Island and maintain a ham radio communication capability and volunteer support network of 1,000 strong.
