Neurographic Art - Supporting Student Mental Health in Pandemic
NYHS Freshman shares her take on this new art form.

“My experience creating Neurographic art was strangely calming”, explains Rebecca Benezra, a Freshman at NYHS (Northwest Yeshiva High School). Benezra takes the Freshman Art Fundamentals course from NYHS art instructor, Suzanne Solomon. Solomon explains that she assigned the project to offer the students something “soothing” in these unprecedented times. She felt it would help “calm the brain and lessen anxiety”.
Neurographic Art is a relatively new art form developed in 2014 by Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev. The name is taken from the similarity of the lines and the connections to neurons and synapses mimicking brain cells. It is used as a stress reliever and form of meditation, calming the brain, and creating beautiful art as part of the process. Art is just one way educators are helping to support student mental health during the pandemic
When asked about her key takeaway from the project, Benezra stated, “It’s very important to try out new art techniques and art forms. You truly never know what you will really enjoy and find meaning in.”
