9/11 Memorial In Milton Will Remain Standing: Report

MILTON, WA — The 9/11 memorial in Milton's Community Park will remain standing, according to a recent report from the News Tribune.

As the Tribune reports, the city had received a complaint over the memorial, which contains the silhouette of an angel, claiming that the memorial violated the separation of church and state and was “an inappropriate government endorsement of religious beliefs.”

The 9/11 Memorial Committee told the Tribune the angle was only meant to represent first responders who risked their lives to help after the twin towers fell.

After initially demanding the 9/11 Memorial Committee remove the memorial, the City of Milton reversed its decision June 25, but will install a new plaque explaining the angel's significance before the memorial's dedication ceremony on Sept. 11.
