Construction Begins On Puyallup Sounder Station Parking Project
When finished, the project will nearly double the amount of parking at the Puyallup Sounder station.
PUYALLUP, WA — Construction has begun on a $79.1 million dollar project to double the parking space at the Puyallup Sounder station.
Sound Transit broke ground on the new construction project early Wednesday. When finished, they'll have built a new five-level garage and several surface parking areas, adding roughly 610 new parking spaces. As part of the project, crews will also build a pedestrian bridge crossing 5th Street NW, and install a new traffic signal for the intersection of 7th Street NW and West Stewart Ave.

“This new garage will add needed parking for Puyallup Sounder station riders, and improved bike and pedestrian access as well,” said Sound Transit Board Chair Kent Keel. “Prior to COVID-19 our Puyallup Sounder station was one of the busiest in our system, and as our economy recovers ridership will rebound. This project will go a long way to enabling more people to take advantage of congestion-free commutes.”

The project was approved as part of the Sound Transit 2 ballot measure, passed by voters back in 2008. It is expected to be completed and open to the public by 2022.
“This is an important project and represents a significant investment in the future of our downtown,” said Puyallup Mayor Julie Door. “I especially appreciate the new traffic signal on Stewart and look forward to the addition of rapid flashing beacons on crosswalks near the high school, which will make this area safer for students and other pedestrians.”
