Construction Coming To Canyon Road East Next Week

Major construction next week will force some drivers to take significant detours. Here's what to know.

PUYALLUP, WA — Crews have resumed their work rebuilding Canyon Road East between 99th and 84th Street East.

Next week they'll need to make a major closure, which the city says is likely to cause some hiccups. Crews will be working at the intersection of Canyon Road and 96th, and will have to close portions of 96th Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday, 96th will be closed west of Canyon Road. Tuesday, it'll be closed east of Canyon. First responders have sketched out a detour map for drivers who need to get on 96th from Canyon or vice versa.

As part of the construction, crews will be installing a new signal light at the intersection. The revamp of Canyon Road E started in April of last year but has halted several times.

Now that its back up and running the county warns that crews may need to convert Canyon into alternating one-way traffic any time between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on workdays.

Once the 96th intersection is complete, crews will work their way north to the intersection with 84th, where they will reconstruct the signals. The whole reconstruction project is expected to be completed in June.

The construction is unrelated to a recent deadly crash on Canyon Road East. Thursday, a wrong-way driver collided head-on with a semi on Canyon near the intersection with 120th street — well out of the construction zone.
