PUYALLUP, WA — The city this week announced it will begin removing the sidewalks located along the west and south sides of the triangular-shaped property containing a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant during the first full week of May.

The sidewalks run north to south along South Meridian and east to west along the Third Street Southeast bypass. Both roadways are considered "high-volume," according to city officials.

The project is reportedly meant to improve pedestrian safety along South Meridian between Ninth and Seventh avenues southeast.

There is not currently, nor has there ever been a crosswalk connecting the east and west sides of South Meridian where it intersects with the bypass. Removing the sidewalks from the area and replacing the strips with grass, to match the existing landscapes, could potentially reduce pedestrian incidents at this intersection.

Pedestrians are advised to use crosswalks located at the intersections of South Meridian and Seventh Avenue Southeast, South Meridian and Ninth Avenue Southeast, and Third Street and Seventh Avenue southeast.
