SPANAWAY, WA — One man has died in an incident in Spanaway Wednesday afternoon. The cause of his death has not been officially confirmed, but a team of investigators that normally only handles deadly police shootings has been called in to investigate.

It all started around 5 p.m. when the Pierce County Sheriff's Department reported that a heavy police response, including the SWAT team and Crisis Negotiators, had been called to a Spanaway home after a deputy reported being shot at. The sheriff's department confirms no deputies have been harmed.

Deputies say the incident happened near the intersection of 173rd Street S and A Street South.

About an hour and a half after that call went out, the sheriff's department then reported that the suspect had been found dead inside his own vehicle by the responding SWAT team.

It is unclear how the suspect died, though the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, or PCFIT, has been called in to investigate. PCFIT is an independent organization that investigates incidents in which officers used deadly force.
