Tacoma Link To Close For 10 Days Starting Monday

During the closure, Sound Transit will provide shuttle buses between all Tacoma Link stations.

TACOMA, WA — Commuters who rely on the Tacoma Link to get around might have a rough week coming up, as Sound Transit has announced the Link will be taking 10 days off starting Monday.

As Sound Transit explains, crews will install new track around-the-clock from June 20th through the 30th. The nature of the work means the light rail cannot be running during that time, so Link service will be cancelled effective 5 a.m. Monday.

During the 10-day closure, Sound Transit will provide shuttle buses between all Tacoma Link stations.

  • Installing curb and gutter on the east side of MLK Jr. Way from S. 19th St. to S. 16th S.
    • That work should be completed later this month, after which construction will move to MLK Jr. Way between S. 16th and S. 13th.
  • Installing new signals at the S. 11th St. and S. 15th St. intersections.
  • Cleaning rail on MLK Jr. Way from 6th Avenue to Division Avenue.

Starting June 25, contractors will also begin installing a new stormwater system at the intersection of Commerce and S. 9th Street.

By the time it opens to the public next year, Sound Transit says they'll have added five new train cars to the Tacoma Link fleet, allowing for arrivals every ten minutes. They estimate that by 2026, the Tacoma Link will serve between 2,000 and 4,000 riders every day.
