WOODINVILLE, WA — Two King County deputies were hospitalized with critical injuries Monday afternoon after a shootout in the parking lot of a Woodinville apartment complex, according to the sheriff's office.

The city has contracted with the sheriff's office to operate the Woodinville Police Department since 1993.

Sergeant Tim Meyer, a media relations officer, said the deputies were investigating reports of a possible car prowler in the parking lot of the Beaumont Apartments around 12:15 p.m. According to Meyer, shortly after the deputies made contact with the suspect, he opened fire, hitting both men. The deputies returned fire, hitting and killing the man, officials said.
