REDMOND, WA — Construction crews have begun a significant renovation project at Westside Park in Redmond's Overlake neighborhood, aiming to improve conditions at the park for years to come. City officials said the 47-year-old park in its current state suffers from poor drainage and has outdated play equipment.

In approaching upgrades for the aging park, city officials considered how to best improve the park as a neighborhood destination for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians equally.

Ultimately, the City Council approved the "Woodsy" plan in April and awarded the construction contract to Ohno-Touchdown JV.

The restoration project will expand the recreation options with basketball, soccer and pickleball courts, and fitness equipment. Other improvements include a new open lawn area bordered by a paved loop and a playground with a zip line.

Here are some of the highlights in the city's chosen plan:

  • Improve the open lawn play space. Drainage will be improved to accommodate activity throughout the year. The play lawn will be bordered by a paved loop path, making the entire site accessible year-round.
  • Replace and enhance the playground, adding more play features, and move to a central location in the park.
  • Replace the sports courts, pickleball and basketball court or multi-purpose court, and ensure properly draining playing surfaces.
  • Add a picnic shelter and zip line if budget allows.

The city also released a map of each planned improvement, so residents can get a better idea of what to expect at the new park. Officials expect renovations will be completed sometime in the fall.
