REDMOND, WA — The Redmond Police Department is wishing a happy retirement to K9 Remy, the police dog half of the city's lone K-9 team.

In a formal retirement announcement this week, the city thanked Remy for serving with "distinction, honor and integrity for the past 6.5 years." The now 8-year-old German Shepard joined the department in 2014, working in tandem with officer Dan Smith. According to the department, the duo helped capture 94 suspects and seize $500,000 in drugs during Remy's tenure. In 2016, he took home a coveted "top dog award" from the Washington State Police Canine Association.

Outside crimefighting, police said Remy and Smith proved popular at community gatherings, including Derby Days and the National Night Out, along with visits to local schools.

In retired life, Remy takes on a new role — dutifully looking after the home while officer Smith is away. Smith will continue as a patrol officer and is helping to mentor the city's incoming K-9 team as they complete training.

"We will greatly miss having K-9 Remy on the RPD team," city officials wrote Wednesday. "We wish him a long, happy retirement with his family enjoying his favorite treats: apples, strawberries and (oddly) broccoli."
