Redmond Will Get Elevated Light Rail Downtown: Sound Transit

The Sound Transit board has selected an alignment for light rail serving downtown and southeast Redmond.

REDMOND, WA - The Sound Transit Board on Thursday selected an alignment for light rail trains serving a station in downtown Redmond. The trains will run on an elevated track between SR 520 to a station near the intersection of 166th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 76th Street.

The downtown Redmond station is the end of a 3.4-mile light rail extension from the Overlake Transit Center. Between Overlake and downtown, another stop will be built at Northeast 70th and Redmond Way. The Overlake station is on track to open in 2023, along with stops in Bellevue, Mercer Island, and in central Seattle.

Next, Sound Transit will collect bids from companies to build the Redmond light rail line. Construction on the Redmond line could begin in 2019, and service might begin as soon as 2024, according to Sound Transit.
