Update: Election 2012: Primary Results for Renton-area House, Senate Districts

Democrat Steve Bergquist and Republican Sarah Sanoy-Wright were leading the crowded field of candidates vying for House Position 2 in the sprawling 11^th District, which stretches from South Seattle and Tukwila, through Renton to the unincorporated area east of the city.

The two are among four Democrats and one Republican vying for the seat vacated by state Rep. Bob Hasegawa, who is running for state Senate.

The results were close, though, with Democrat Stephanie Bowman in a close third.

Running for the seat are: Bobby Virk (D), a Renton dentist; Rob Holland (D), a Port of Seattle commissioner; Bergquist (D), a teacher; Bowman (D), a nonprofit executive director and former Port of Tacoma manager; and Sanoy-Wright, (R), a small-business owner.

Here are the District 11 results from the first round of primary ballots released Tuesday by King County Elections:

House District 11, Pos. 2

The top two finishers advance to the general election. King County will release new election results at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. So far, about 25 percent of eligible voters in King County have returned ballots. Secretary of State Sam Reed had predicted turnout of about 46 percent.

Also in the 11^th District:

•Democrat Hasegawa, vying to move to the state Senate after eight years in the House, received 8,048 votes, or nearly 68 percent. Republican challenger Kristin Thompson received 3,799, or 32 percent. They’re seeking the seat vacated by retiring Sen. Margarita Prentice.

•Rep. Zack Hudgins, D-Tukwila, was far ahead, receiving 6,828, or 68 percent of the votes, for House Position 1, while challenger Democrat Jim Flynn, of Renton, received 3,003, or nearly 30 percent. Hudgins, who has served in the House since 2003, dropped his bid for secretary of state in March, citing the fund-raising freeze required by a special session to deal with the state budget.

In the 33^rd District, Democratic Rep. Dave Upthegrove was unopposed for Position 2, receiving 9,437  votes, or nearly 97 percent.

And for Position 1, Democratic Rep. Tina Orwall received 8,443 votes, or nearly 72 percent, while Republican challenger Will Benge received 3,324, or 28.1.

In the 37^th District, Democratic Rep. Sharon Tomiko Santos was unopposed in the primary for position 1 and pulled in 11,364 votes, or 98.29 percent.

And for position 2, Rep. Eric Pettigrew, D-Seattle, received 10,777 votes, or 84.7 percent, to independent challenger Tamra Smilanich’s 1,878, 14.7 percent. Pettigrew has served in the House since 2003. Both head to the general election in November.

In the 41st District, Republican state Sen. Steve Litzow will move on to the general election for his Senate seat against Democrat Maureen Judge. He received nearly 58 percent of the vote to Judge’s 42 percent.

Democratic Rep. Marcie Maxwell (56 percent), will face Republican Tim Eaves (43 percent) for the House Position 1 seat. And Rep. Judy Clibborn was unopposed for her Position 2 seat.

And for those of you following the library measure, the , with 6,903 votes, or 76 percent. The Piazza location had 2,164 votes, or nearly 24 percent.
