Update: 26-Year-Old Critical After Homemade Sparkler Bomb Explodes

The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center.

A 26-year-old man was in critical condition Thursday after a homemade "sparkler bomb" exploded in the Renton area, hurling debris and waking up neighbors.

A photo from the King County Sheriff's Office showed sparkler wires embedded in a tree.

The man had left a party at the Fairwood Apartments and ignited the device, which was made of at least 50 sparklers wrapped together with wire and duct tape, KOMO news reported.

The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was in critical condition with leg and arm injuries, sheriff's office spokeswoman Cindi West said. She told KOMO that the man's left lower leg may have to be amputated below the knee due to the seriousness of the injuries.

The Fourth of July got off to a rocky start in Renton, where apparently homemade fireworks seriously injured a 26-year-old man, KOMO News reported.

Emergency crews responded to the 14600 block of S.E. 176th St. at about 4:30 a.m. to a report of a “sparkler bomb” blowing up, the station reported. The man had left a party at the Fairwood Apartments, ignited the device outside and was standing too close when it went off.

A King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told the station that the man was taken to the hospital with significant leg and arm injuries.
