One Fireworks-Related Fire Reported by KCFD 20 Over Fourth of July

Information from KCFD 20

King County Fire District 20 (Skyway Fire) responded to just one fireworks related fire on the Fourth of July. The small fire in the 11800 block of 64 Avenue South was reported  just after 11 p.m. and was extinguished quickly.

"With the number of fireworks exploding on the West Hill the potential for more fires and injuries was there," said Dave Nelson spokesperson for the Fire District. "We fully staffed our engines, brush truck and two command vehicles to respond to any additional calls, however they never came. Firefighters watched from the station, several premature explosions of fireworks among a large crowd that developed north of the station."

"Safety is always number one and one fireworks related fire or injury is one to many," said Nelson. "We have seen a continued decline in fireworks related calls, but this should never stop people from making sure they are prepared and responsible. This includes picking up fireworks debris."

This morning KCFD 20 firefighters were seen cleaning fireworks debris off 76 Avenue South, north of the Skyway Fire Station. "We prevented people from randomly discharging fireworks in front of the station this year, by deploying no parking signs and limiting the area where fireworks could be discharge so we are able to respond to any emergency without additional danger to those celebrating their Independence."

Left over fireworks are now considered illegal and should be disposed by soaking them in water overnight. You can then dispose of them in your regular trash.
