Protect Giving Days: Tell Congress To Preserve Charitable Tax Deduction

Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Please submit letters via email to jenny.manning@patch.com and include your full name and city of residence.

I am one of the many people speaking out against about the proposed talk of reducing the charitable giving deduction of some taxpayers to charities. As you can see below non profit groups and coalitions ranging from helping the poor to education and fighting cancer are concerned about the impact to their good work of any reduction in the charitable giving deduction.

Today and tomorrow are Protect Giving Days across our nation. I heartily endorse this effort. I am a member of Seattle Philanthropic Advisors Network, Washington Planned Giving Council and Association of Fundraising Professionals. I have helped to foster philanthropy for 25 years in our region. During these difficult times we must continue to help worthy causes through the charitable giving deduction.

The non profit sector provides services in ways that government is unable. This is a non partisan effort and the hit to non profits from a reduction of the charitable giving deduction could be huge. It is estimated that a reduction in the charitable giving deduction will cost non profits and those that depend on them $5-6 Billion. That's a huge impact!
