Renton Unveils Permit-Ready Program To Construct Accessory Units
Renton homeowners will soon be able to construct accessory dwelling units on their property on a quick timeline with minimal fees.
RENTON, WA — Renton homeowners will soon be able to build accessory dwelling units, sometimes called "mother-in-law apartments," on their properties, with minimal fees and a streamlined permitting process under a new city program.
Renton's permit-ready ADU program is designed to shorten the construction timeline and reduce the barriers to adding more livable space on properties. City officials said they found accessory units to be a viable option to address regional population growth and the increasing demand for housing, providing an easy way to add new residences to existing neighborhoods.
City officials define ADUs as:

In finalizing the program, Renton contracted architects to create eight pre-approved design plans that complement the city's existing styles. Designs include single-story and two-story options, and architectural styles like contemporary, Victorian, craftsman and rambler. Each model includes a kitchen, sleeping area and bathroom, along with one to three bedrooms.
In constructing the units, either for family use or to rent out, homeowners can expect most fees to be waived or reduced, including those for building permits and various impact fees.
