Washington state boasts 45 trails on the National Recreation Trails database exceeding 790 miles of trails alone.

Ahead of National Trails Day this past weekend, federal leaders designated 28 trails across the country as national recreation trails, adding about 650 miles of trails to the National Trails System.
Curiously, and in spite of the fact that Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, a noted Washington state business leader, outdoors enthusiast and Renton High School graduate, helped to announce the new designations, none of the 28 trails were in Evergreen state.Â
Such as it is for 2013 - Washington already boasts 45 trails on the National Recreation Trails (NRT) database exceeding 790Â miles of trails alone. Seven trails are located in or cross into King County, including the Washington Lake Bike Trail, Montlake Cut National Waterside and the Discovery Park Loop Trail in Seattle. According to the NRT: "While National Scenic Trails and National Historic Trails may only be designated by an act of Congress, National Recreation Trails may be designated by the Secretary of Interior or the Secretary of Agriculture to recognize exemplary trails of local and regional significance."
An NRT designation qualifies a trail for benefits including promotion, technical assistance, networking and access to funding.Â
