Patch: How long have you been doing business in town?

Find out what's happening in Rentonfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Moen: We have been in business for over 40 years and have been in Kent for over 30 years now. We are proud to serve our local community and partner with the Kent School District to keep students falling behind stay on track.

Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?

Moen: I strongly feel the largest impact we can have on our local community is by empowering each and every community member with a great education and self-confidence. That is what we do for our students starting with kindergarten all way up to college prep. I am also very passionate about STEM (science, technology, engineering, math); our goal is to inspire young people to pursue paths in STEM careers.

Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger in five words, what would those words be?

Moen: Empowering our youth for tomorrow.

Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced in your job?

Moen: Our biggest challenge has been pivoting our business to offer Live Online Tutoring during this time of social distancing, in addition to our in-center services. We are back and re-open with COVID-19 policies in place; however, for families who prefer the digital route over in-person tutoring, we are offering both at this time. With our Live Online Tutoring we are able to offer the same quality of education we are known for, and have been developing and improving over the past 40 years.

Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Moen: Seeing the progress our students make, and having the decades of data to show what we do works and makes a big difference in the lives of our Sylvan families as well as our community.

Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?

Moen: At Sylvan Learning Centers of Kent and Maple Valley, our customer service and commitment to community separates us from our competition, in addition to the unparalleled curriculum, technology and learning software we have developed over decades, with millions and millions of dollars of investment. Our approach to learning is simple: Learning should be personal. And we make learning personal through a custom dedicated learning plan for each student, as well as one-on-one attention when they run into challenges.

Patch: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when it comes to success?

Moen: No-excuse attitude. All of our results are derived from our thoughts, actions and attitude. This is what separates those who choose to be successful from those who do not. Taking ownership of your results.

Patch: Are there any new projects or endeavors you're working on that you're extra excited about?

Moen: We are very excited to be offering new STEM Camps for the summer of 2020 focusing on coding with some engineering and robotics. We are also excited to continue to offer our new Live Online Tutoring now and in the future.

Patch: Do you have any events coming up in your community?

Moen: We will be planning events in the coming months!
