Traffic Lane Change on Rainier Avenue South Project Coming Sept. 11
Here are the latest updates in the Rainier Avenue S Improvement Project.
Information from the Rainier Avenue S Improvement Project
On the night of September 11 (weather permitting) crews will restripe lanes along Rainier Avenue S to shift northbound traffic to the east. This shift will allow space for construction on the center roadway medians. Drivers should pay close attention on Thursday morning during the commute, especially when entering or exiting businesses along Rainier Avenue S. This lane configuration will be in place until work on the medians is complete, estimated for mid-Fall.
Upcoming roadway paving Over the next month, crews will be completing final paving along Rainier Avenue S. The work will take place at night and will require temporary lane restrictions. This work is an important step in the completion of the Rainier Avenue S Improvement project and is happening ahead of schedule. Our contractor, Johansen Excavating, has been working hard over the last year to move the project along quickly. We expect overall construction of the roadway to be substantially complete prior to our planned date of Spring 2014.
Â
Median construction - what to expect Construction of the medians along Rainier Avenue S will look different than construction on the east and west sides of the roadway. Drivers can access businesses by turning right from traffic lanes, but left turns will only be possible at intersections. Work activities will include:
- Using orange barriers to delineate work areas
- Removing asphalt in medians
- Installing raised medians and landscaped areas (daytime work)
- Final street grading
- Paving final layers of asphalt (night work)
