29 Seattle Pools, Beaches And Spray Parks Are Open This Weekend

A variety of pools, beaches, spray parks and libraries are open this weekend to help Seattleites cool off amid a record-breaking heat wave.

SEATTLE — Seattle is opening up dozens of options to help neighbors, visitors and families cool off during the record-breaking heat streak ahead, including eleven wading pools, eight lifeguarded beaches, seven spray parks, two outdoor pools and two indoor pools. A few places have already opened, and the rest will welcome visitors on Saturday, June 26.

City beaches

Beginning Saturday, eight city beaches will be open and staffed with lifeguards daily until 7 p.m:

  • Madrona (853 Lake Washington Blvd.)
  • Magnuson (6505 NE 65th St.)
  • Matthews (9300 51st Ave. NE)
  • Madison (1900 43rd Ave. E)
  • Mount Baker (2301 Lake Washington Blvd. S.)
  • Pritchard Island (8400 55th Ave S.)
  • Seward (5902 Lake Washington Blvd. S)
  • West Green Lake (7312 W Green Lake Dr.)

Outdoor pools

Seattle's Parks and Recreation Department operates two outdoor pools each summer, and this year both will offer swim lessons:

  • Lowery C. “Pop” Mounger Pool
    • Location: 2535 32nd Ave. W
    • Phone: 206-684-4708
    • Open dates: June 19 - September 6.
    • The “big pool” has a 50-foot corkscrew slide and the warmer, shallower “little pool” is great for relaxing and for teaching little ones.
  • Colman Pool
    • Location: 8603 Fauntleroy Way SW
    • Phone: 206-684-7494
    • Open dates: June 19 - September 6.
    • The heated, saltwater pool enjoys a spectacular view of Puget Sound from its prime location on the beach in West Seattle’s Lincoln Park.

Indoor pools

Pandemic-related budget and staffing challenges have left most of Seattle's indoor pools shuttered, however, two are already open and both expanded their options for visitors earlier in the week.

Since June 21, both indoor pools offer reduced capacity lap, recreational and fitness swim sessions. Pre-registration is no longer required and all sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Officials said visitors can pay admission for their swim 15 minutes before their slot. The city expects some swims will sell out due to a lower maximum capacity.

Spray parks

Six of Seattle's spray parks will reopen June 26, offering a fun way to cool off the whole family each day, between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.:

  • Beacon Mountain in Jefferson Park
  • Georgetown Playfield
  • Highland Park
  • Northacres Park
  • South Lake Union Park
  • Yesler Terrace Community Center

Officials said an opening date for the Pratt Playground spray park was being determined.

Wading pools

For the youngest Seattleites, 11 wading pools will open for the summer Saturday, and welcome visitors every day through Labor Day, whenever temperatures hit 70 degrees or more. Unfortunately, a regionwide chlorine shortage required a few adjustments to the plan, officials said, but all pools will be able to open on an alternate schedule.

Here's what the temporary schedule looks like, beginning June 26:

Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday:

  • Dahl
  • Delridge (11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.)
  • Soundview
  • South Park
  • Volunteer

Wednesday:

  • All wading pools closed

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday:

  • Bitter Lake
  • East Queen Anne
  • Green Lake (opens July 2)
  • Lincoln
  • Powell Barnett
  • Van Asselt

Families can find specific wading pool schedules online and can ask each one's status before heading out the door by calling the hotline at 206-684-7796.

Seattle Public Libraries

Another way to cool off over the weekend is by visiting one of Seattle's libraries, with both the Central Library and several neighborhood branches welcoming visitors back at 50 percent capacity during peak hours. Masks are still required inside each branch, regardless of vaccination status, and the capacity limits will change after the state reopens on June 30.
