3 Week Closure Of 100th Avenue Northeast Begins

The city of Kirkland says the closure will be to replace a culvert that will protect the local fish population.

KIRKLAND, WA — 100th Avenue Northeast in Kirkland will be closed for up to three weeks starting Wednesday.

The closure centers around the part of the road the crosses over Cedar Creek. City leaders say that stretch of road will be closed all day and all night in both directions. Commuters are encouraged to avoid the area by taking a detour along Northeast 145th Street and Juanita-Woodinville road to avoid the area.

According to the city, the closure will allow contractors to replace a three-decade old Ceder Creek culvert with a new one. The new culvert will be large enough to free up nearly half a mile of river to trout, coho and other salmon native to the area. It also adds more space on the side of the road for a future construction project which will add two more car lanes, sidewalks and bike lanes along 100th Ave NE.

"The work being done on this project will help protect our native fish populations while giving us the ability to make transportation improvements that will benefit community members that walk, bicycle and drive," said Interim Public Works Director Julie Underwood. "However, we know that this work will create traffic complications for commuters and for neighboring residents. Please plan for extra time and utilize the detour route so that we can finish this work efficiently and with as minimal impact as possible on adjacent community members."

The construction project to add more lanes along 100th Ave NE is expected to begin later this fall.
