SEATAC, WA — Travelers passing through Sea-Tac Airport can now learn a lifesaving skill before they catch a flight. The airport partnered with the American Heart Association to install a hands-only CPR training kiosk in the Central Terminal ahead of the holiday travel season. According to the Port of Seattle, only 19 other U.S. airports have similar installations.

Airport officials said the Port of Seattle Fire Department responded to more than 2,800 medical calls in the first nine months of 2019. They hope teaching travelers how to intervene will help save lives during some of the airport's busiest travel days.

"It's vital that we encourage more people to learn this lifesaving skill, including the millions of travelers that visit SEA Airport each year," said Randy Krause, Port of Seattle Fire Chief. "The kiosk is a convenient way to learn and practice compressions and gain the confidence to be ready to act in an emergency."

According to Sea-Tac, the training takes just five minutes and begins with a brief video tutorial, followed by a hands-on practice session using a rubber torso. The system provides feedback on the depth and rate of compressions and provides pointers on proper hand placement.

The kiosk is operated by the American Heart Association and sponsored by the MultiCare Pulse Heart Institute.
