Seattle-Alaska Cruises Return With 10 Sailings July To October

Holland America will welcome vaccinated passengers back aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam between July 24 and Oct. 2. Here's what to expect.

SEATTLE — Ten Alaska-bound cruises are scheduled to set sail from Seattle beginning in July, pending final regulatory approvals, Holland America announced Thursday.

Resuming some cruise routes this summer was made possible through the Alaska Tourism Recovery Act, which cleared its last congressional hurdle Thursday and awaits President Joe Biden's signature. The legislation temporarily exempts cruise ships en route to Alaska from having to stop in Canada, where officials extended a ban on cruise travel through the end of the year.

Gus Antorcha, Holland America's president, celebrated the pending return in a statement shared Thursday.

“Holland America Line has been cruising to Alaska for nearly 75 years, and we feel deeply committed to trying to help our friends in ‘The Great Land’ get back on their feet in any way we can this summer. Given the recent positive collaboration from the CDC, as well as optimism about a resolution with the PVSA, we feel like it’s now or never to give ourselves a chance to bring cruising back to Alaska this year. We would like to offer our sincerest appreciation to Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, Congressman Don Young and Governor Mike Dunleavy for their tireless efforts on behalf of the many small businesses that are the backbone of Alaska tourism.”

Before they can set sail, cruise lines must meet health standards set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including full vaccination status for passengers and crew members. Holland America said all passengers would need to have proof of full vaccination, and be at least two weeks beyond their final dose.

The seven-day cruises aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam will depart Seattle on Saturdays from July 24 through Oct. 2, with stops in Juneau, Icy Straight Point, Sitka and Ketchikan. Fares at $799 per person, and a premium "Have It All" package is $1,079. Ticket sales also have flexible cancellation terms.
