Video: Historically Cute Red Panda Cubs Born In Seattle

SEATTLE, WA - Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo celebrated a historic birth recently when an adult red panda couple had twins - the first time that has happened in 29 years, according to the zoo.

Parents Hazel, 2, and Yukiko, 13, welcomed their twin female cubs into the world on June 19. Each cub weighed about 5 ounces, and were totally healthy. For now, the cubs will remain with Hazel during the crucial first few months of life. Zoo visitors might be able to see them by the end of the summer, however.

"We’re monitoring the new family via a den cam to ensure the cubs are thriving. Our animal care staff have minimal physical contact with the mom and cubs in order to minimize disturbance and allow Hazel a quiet environment," zoo curator Mark Myers said in a press release.

The cubs don't do much during the first week of life except sleep and eat. They won't open their eyes for another two or three weeks, according to the zoo.

Red pandas are relatives of the black-and-white giant pandas. Both species are endangered, but red pandas only grow to about the size of raccoon.
